BYOD’s premise grew out of a Spring 2026 class taught by Sofia Garcia on the history of algorithmic art. One student in the class, Gwen Goins, became curious about data — what it is, what it does, and what it has always done in the history of computational art. With support from an NYTechWeek Student Grant, she and her collaborators decided to make an event that celebrates, explores, and interrogates data as creative material.

This event is 100% student-organized. It would not have been possible without the ITP community, which creates the conditions for students to take real risks.

Special thanks: Brian Bishop, Janae Sylvester Oliver, Devlyn Kornegay, Ryan Webber, Jisoo Kim, RaFia Santana, and Shiva Viswan, and many more.

If you want more creative coding in your life beyond BYOD, we recommend Creative Coding NYC, NYC Resistor, and Recurse Center.

Thanks for being here.
